Portraits

Commissioned by the City of Kiel by the director of the Stadtgalerie Kiel, Peter Kruska, Nina Venus painted the portrait of the city president Hans-Werner Tovar, who was in office from 2013-2023. For this commission, Nina Venus had three sittings with Hans-Werner Tovar over the course of two months. The requirement for this portrait commission was the recognizability of the person in their official function and in relation to the place where they work. Representation and presentation are combined. The painting is displayed in the grand picture gallery of the town hall along many other - mostly male - portraits of city presidents and mayors over the centuries of the city's 750-year history.
