Institutional Portrait Commissions

Commissioned by the City of Kiel and Stadtgalerie Kiel director Dr. Peter Kruska, Nina Venus painted the official portrait of city president Hans-Werner Tovar, in office 2013–2023. Nina Venus met with him for three sittings over two months. The commission specified that the sitter be recognizable in his official function, tied to the place where he worked — combining representation with presentation. The portrait now hangs in Kiel Town Hall's historical grand picture gallery, alongside portraits of the city's former mayors and city presidents spanning its 750-year history.
