Each portrait begins as an encounter. The sitting is the foundation. A shared duration in which a person becomes, briefly, a subject of sustained looking. What accumulates around this, photographs, snapshots, a conversation, becomes material too.

Drawings are a way of thinking and experimenting before painting. The work on the canvass follows in layers, each one a kind of memory laid over the last, until likeness stops being a matter of accuracy and becomes something closer to presence — the sense that someone, not just their appearance, is in the room.

The four portraits shown here from beginnings to end, trace this process through different commissions, each one a negotiation between the person and the painter, between subject and object — between who someone is, and who they become, in paint, for others to see.
