KUNST & KARRIERE

KK WS1920

KUNST & KARRIERE is a seminar a lecture series, and a professionalization programme Nina Venus developed during her time as a lecturer at Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design. It is a cross-class format with theoretical and practice-oriented components specifically meant for advanced students concerned with the working and professional conditions of artists after graduating.

KUNST & KARRIERE consisted of three components: the weekly seminars, the lecture series and the workshops. K&K became an integral part of the educational offer for graduate students, while the lecture and discussion series was open to a broader, art-interested public beyond the university and became a popular, wider forum.

The weekly seminars dealt with the reality of working artists, and aimed to open up the discourse and provide transparency and insight in to the art world and the art market. The sessions were supplemented by intensive workshops that dealt with the many challenges presupposing economic independence as an artist - next to artistic practice - such as writing an artist's statement, writing proposals, writing bills, researching insurance, contracts, building a portfolio, creating a website, connecting to galleries and institutions, etc.

The lecture series invited professionals from various areas of artistic and creative work: printers, painters, sculptors, musicians, writers, curators, gallery owners and museum directors talked about their careers and gave an insight into the highs and lows of their work. It is precisely this openness and accessibility of professionally experienced, successful and accomplished artists that is so essential and inspiring for students.
